AMWIK ushers in a new Executive Director

By Mbeke Wambua

The Association of Media Women in Kenya (AMWIK) was established in 1983 and registered under the societies act as a non-profit membership organization for women journalists and communicators.

It was formed at a time when the voices of women and their issues received very little attention in the media.

Judie Kaberia, former Capital FM Editor, was appointed as the new Executive Director. The announcement was made public by AMWIK chairperson Dr. Dorothy Njoroge. She takes over from Marceline Nyambala.

“Judie has the right temperament, work experience and leadership skills to bring transformative change to the association at this time,” she said.

She has been a regular contributor on journalism and gender equality in Kenya’s mainstream media.

Judie holds a master’s degree in new media, Governance and Democracy from the university of Leicester in the UK and is also a qualified media trainer with 15 years of experience from Aga Khan University.

She honed her journalism skills at Capital FM for more than 10 years, before venturing into consultancy and on top of her newly added title, she chairs the Africa Check Foundation Board in Kenya.

She served as an international consultant with the (UNDP). Previously, she worked as the country coordinator and later as regional coordinator (East Africa) for Germany’s Wamoyo Foundation where she spearheaded high level human rights advocacy and transitional justice dialogue.

In an open meeting she had at her new office, she promised to do her level best to take AMWIK to the next level and all she asked of her workmates was team work and co-operation.
