Ann Kananu sworn in as Nairobi's third Governor

By Precious Joely

H.E Ann Kananu Mwenda has been sworn in as the third Nairobi City County Governor. Judge Lilian Mutende oversaw the oath ceremony at the Kenyatta International Convention Center (KICC) on Tuesday, 16th November 2021.

H.E Kananu had been serving as Nairobi’s Acting Governor since the impeachment of Mike Sonko in December 2020. Former Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko had challenged the swearing-in of Kananu as the county boss, however, on November 8th, the Supreme Court cancelled out the petition.

In her speech, Kananu stated that her tenure as Acting Governor allowed her to undertake measures to cushion Nairobi residents from the impact of the pandemic. Kananu signed into law the Sexual Gender-Based Violence Bill, disbursed bursaries worth Kshs. 503 million to needy primary and secondary students, recruited 498 early childhood development teachers and expanded fire stations from 2 to 6 functional fire stations across the county.

“The responsibility bestowed upon me as Governor of Nairobi is no mean feat. However, I confidently state that with your support I am up to the task and I will serve you to the best of my ability." Kananu said.

H.E Ann Kananu also stated that it was not the first time a woman has been at the leadership of Nairobi. In 1970, the city elected H.E the Late Margaret Wambui Kenyatta as mayor, the first African woman mayor of Kenya's capital city and the second African woman mayor in the country. Kananu added that she was equally privileged to join H.E Governor Charity Ngilu and H.E Governor Ann Waiguru as the Country’s three female Governors.

“Today marks yet another milestone for women and girls in Kenya,” said Kananu. She encouraged women to come forth and participate in leadership in the country.
